The Annie E. Casey Foundation announced Thursday at a UNITY ’08 news conference that state-level data on kids and families in five of the largest racial groups is available online to the public.
Data in the areas of health, education, poverty and employment are now publicly accessible on the foundation’s KIDS COUNT Data Center Web site www.aecf.org/kidscount.
Users of the KIDS COUNT Web site can compare their state’s data to other states, along with the national data in all four areas. Demographic data also is available in the form of pictures which can be posted to a blog or Web site, or downloaded.
While the Annie E. Casey Foundation acknowledges that there are racial gaps in health, education, poverty level and employment among minorities – especially Latinos and African-Americans – recent trends have shown some improvements among minority kids. Better yet, data reveals that most states have seen a stall in racial gaps since the 1990s.
“The data reveals that children of color continue to face disproportionately more obstacles than other children,” said Laura Beavers, national KIDS COUNT coordinator. “All children deserve a chance to thrive, but not all kids have the same opportunity to achieve success.”
